A food plot only performs if it's built around how deer actually move on your ground. The clearing is the easy part — the decisions that make or break a plot get made before the machine ever starts. Here's what we walk through with you on-site.
Size to the purpose
A kill plot you're hunting directly over stays small — a quarter to a half acre — so deer feel secure enough to step in during legal shooting light. A destination plot meant to hold deer on the property runs larger and pulls animals from neighboring land. Most well-managed properties run a mix of both, and the size of each one depends on your deer density and how many plots you can sustain.
Placement next to cover
Deer approach a plot from security cover — timber, thick brush, a creek corridor. A plot dropped in the middle of an open field gets browsed at night and ignored during the day. We look for openings adjacent to cover where deer have a comfortable approach and a short, safe exit.
Wind and stand location
Your prevailing wind determines where your stand or blind needs to sit, and that dictates which side of the plot the cover should be on. Get this backwards and you'll educate every deer on the property in one sit. We factor stand access in before we clear so you're not hunting a plot you can't get to without being winded.
Sunlight and drainage
A plot that doesn't get enough sun won't grow what you plant, and one that holds water will drown it. We read the canopy and the lay of the ground to make sure the opening we create actually gets light and sheds runoff.
